It's not that I don't love you. That's never been in question for me, as I have loved you for so long now that I have a hard time remembering the time before our love. And it's not that I'm not willing to sacrifice for you... I think I would give anything in the world if it meant you and I could be together.

It's simply that I can't, am not capable of this type of commitment. I say I would sacrifice anything, but what I would not sacrifice is your happiness. I know I'm not good for you, now, I'm sure of it. I see your face when I come home from missions dead on my feet and pretending to be human, and the pain there grieves me more than anything, more than the deaths I still mourn, more than my own failures. It's my greatest failure, I think, not being able to be the man you deserve.

So, tonight, I'm going, and you can't talk me out of it. Unless you open your mouth, then I might have to give in. And if you smile at me, just so, and say, "I forgive you," then I might think about it a bit longer, give it another day just to make sure I'm making the right decision. If you blush and run your hand across that scar on your face, then maybe I'll decide it can wait until tomorrow, or the day after, or maybe until after my next mission, just in case something changes.

If you look at me and say you love me, maybe I'll put off leaving you for the rest of my life.
